CAROLINA
Singles Hiking & Adventure Club
The Hiking Club was founded eleven years ago, in
August of 1990. Vaughn Smith complained to me that the Greenville Singles Club (which we were both members of and which has since disbanded) didn't do enough hiking. I suggested he start a hiking club for singles. He put a small ad in the Greenville News.

The first "hike" was held at his 200 acre spread in Reidville. We served cake after the hike! The club was initially called Greenville Singles Hiking Club. We started with one hike a month, then increased it to two hikes a month. As people got to know each other they suggested we add social activities to the calendar, in addition to the hikes. Eventually, we changed the name to Carolina Singles Hiking & Adventure Club. The "Carolina" part reflects that we encompass a greater area that Greenville, drawing people from several other counties. The "Adventure" part covers anything that isn't a hike. It's also become a running joke that, if anything doesn't go as smoothly as planned (i.e., a wrong turn on a trail, encounters with bees, a sudden rain storm, etc.) we say, "That's the 'adventure' part of the club!"

We welcome adults of all ages, whether single, separated, widowed or divorced. We have a few married couples, due to our "grandfather" clause. If someone is already involved in the club and then later gets married, they can stay in the club as a couple. We don't "divorce" our friends!

The club is completely run by volunteers, and there are no officers, board members, or dues (although donations are accepted). Anyone who wants to become an event leader is encouraged to attend the quarterly planning meeting and add a hike or social activity to the schedule.

Happy Trails!
